چکیده

With the increase of computer power and advancement of modeling software, the study of turbulent gas-particle flow problems using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) techniques is gradually becoming attractive in the engineering field. Two basic CFD approaches are used to simulate the gas-particle flow, i.e. the Eulerian-Lagrangian model and the EulerianEulerian model. The aim of this thesis is three-fold: i) to investigate the performance of both the Eulerian-Lagrangian model and the Eulerian-Eulerian model to simulate the turbulent gas-particle flow; ii) to investigate the indoor airflows and contaminant particle flows using the Eulerian-Lagrangian model; iii) to develop and validate particle-wall collision models and a wall roughness model for the Eulerian-Lagrangian model and to utilize these models to investigate the effects of wall roughness on the particle flows. In the first part of this thesis, the Eulerian-Lagrangian model in the software package FLUENT (FLUENT Inc.) and the Eulerian-Eulerian model in an in-house research code were employed to simulate the gas-particle flows. The validation against the measurement for two-phase flow over backward facing step and in a 90-degree bend revealed that both CFD approaches provide reasonably good prediction for both the gas and particle phases. Then, the Eulerian-Lagrangian model was employed to investigate the indoor airflows and contaminant particle concentration in two geometrically different rooms. For the first room configuration, the performances of three turbulence models for simulating indoor airflow were evaluated and validated against the measured air phase velocity data. All the three turbulence models provided good prediction of the air phase velocity, while the Large Eddy Simulation (LES) model base on the Renormalization Group theory (RNG) provided the best agreement with the measurements. As well, the RNG-based LES model is able to provide the instantaneous air velocity and turbulence that are required for the evaluation and design of the ventilation system. In the other two-zone ventilated room configuration, contaminant particle concentration decay within the room was simulated and validated against the experimental data using the RNG-based LES model together with the Lagrangian particle tracking model. The numerical results revealed that the particle-wall

Effects of coupling on turbulent gas-particle boundary layer flows at borderline volume fractions using kinetic theory

This study is concerned with the prediction of particles’ velocity in a dilute turbulent gas-solidboundary layer flow using a fully Eulerian two-fluid model. The closures required for equationsdescribing the particulate phase are derived from the kinetic theory of granular flows. Gas phaseturbulence is modeled by one-equation model and solid phase turbulence by MLH theory. Resultsof one-way and...

Numerical computation of turbulent gas-particle flow in a 90 degree bend: comparison of two particle modelling approaches

A numerical study into the physical characteristics of dilute gasparticle flows over a square-sectioned 90◦ bend is reported. Two approaches, namely the Lagrangian particle tracking model and Eulerian two fluid model are employed to predict the gas-particle flows. Renormalization Group based kmodel is used as the turbulent closure for both the approaches; however, for the Eulerian model, additi...

Effect of Surface Roughness on Vortex Length and Efficiency of Gas-oil Cyclones through CFD Modelling

Separation of suspended droplets in a fluid flow has been a great concern for scientists and technologists. In the current study, the effect of the surface roughness on flow field and the performance of a gas-oil cyclone is studied numerically. The droplets and the turbulent airflow inside the cyclone are considered to be the discrete and continuous phases respectively. The Reynolds stress mode...

Numerical Simulation of Turbulent Subsonic Compressible Flow through Rectangular Microchannel

In this study, turbulent compressible gas flow in a rectangular micro-channel is numerically investigated. The gas flow assumed to be in the subsonic regime up to Mach number about 0.7. Five low and high Reynolds number RANS turbulence models are used for modeling the turbulent flow. Two types of mesh are generated depending on the employed turbulence model. The computations are performed for R...

Numerical Simulation of Free Surface in the Case of Plane Turbulent Wall Jets in Shallow Tailwater

Wall-jet flow is an important flow field in hydraulic engineering, and its applications include flow from the bottom outlet of dams and sluice gates. In this paper, the plane turbulent wall jet in shallow tailwater is simulated by solving the Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes equations using the standard  turbulence closure model. This study aims to explore the ability of a time splitting method ...
